"Once upon a time"

In reality, it was just the other day
I posted on facebook about the use of swear words...
Once upon a time folks didn't talk that way.

Of course, some of the men did...on the job, sitting around outside.
But they didn't bring it in the house...
Once upon a time.
Not so long ago...
Women were highly revered as the keeper of homes.
We taught our children manners and respect for others & their property..
We kept a higher standard for the family..
Once upon a time!

I asked people in general..
to check their vocabulary, there's no need to swear about anything.
Kids today are bombarded with all the swearing words..
It's on tv...at school...the computer.
People have forgotten how to express themselves without swearing.
When I was a kid, we would'nt even whisper that word
for fear we would be struck by lightning...
or Grandma!!!!
I'm hoping it will make them choose a more concise way of speaking.
A man would remind another man if he started swearing...or tell a dirty joke.
Excuse me, he would say...there's a lady present.
Then they would apologize...

At least that's the way it was...
Once upon a time.

  1. I agree wholeheartedly! I see some comments on my Face Book page and I cringe! I do struggle using inapproriate language, never learning any of it from either of my folks! But today is an "F" bomb fest! It is horrible. I really try and when my sweet tiny great grand aby boy is around, I remind all the kids to check their bad language at the door! I will not tolerate it in my house when my sweet Jayden is near! He is so precious that his little ears don't need that junk in his head! Great post! I hope your holiday yetserday was lovely! We have a beautiful day with phamily all around. I am grateful for them and you too! Glad to know you here. Hugs Anne

  2. Yes... back in the good old days which are now gone. Lots of things back then I preferred than the way things are now, but have to admit I do swear in my own home when it's just hubby and I. No harm done. Just words we use when we stub a toe or ding an elbow as we pass a chair.. I do think bad language is over done by many people, and I do think that as young teens grow up, that with time they will give it up since now they just use it mainly for shock value. Freedom of speech whether it be good words or bad words is important and if that means hearing bad word now and then then so be it. Sorry it bothers you, but doubt there is anything that our generation can do to change it... If you are seeing it on Facebook then the answer may be to just block those people's posts. Oh how the times have changed since the good old days. :-)

  3. Oh, I use a few words now and then too, didn't mean to say I'm an angel. But some of the language they use now is just plain vulgar, and it's only gonna get worse..Cause young people use it as a part of their vocabulary. All I meant is we don't have to swear to get our point across. I don't care if it's the new thing to say. Somebody has to set a standard or we're all gonna lose. I believe my kids and grands will make an effort to cool it, at least around me.

  4. Times have changed. Many of the changes are for the better. Some are for the worse. As a kid, I didn't swear because I was terribly fearful of all adults. It wasn't a healthy fear. It was traumatic. Many children were kept in line with brute force. I can't say times were better back in the day because they weren't. Things were just different. Swearing isn't that big of a deal to me, all things considered.

  5. Yes, I do agree there is just no decorum anymore. Language, clothing, media and mannerisms are vulgar and low-class, but there is not much we can do except hold to higher values in our own homes, and hope that it has some influence on the young ones.

  6. Very sad but, very true...your words are very wise and I wish with all my heart folks would act like they did once upon a time......blessings dear Glenda and thanks for sharing some truth with us.

  7. Seems every other word out of some people's mouths is a swear word. Do they hear themselves? Then I suppose they are mad at their toddler when it starts echoing their talk. To think many young people think this is the way 'civilization' always was. We know it was much different. Much. Sarah
